When it comes to selecting a diet plan, there are literally hundreds to pick from. It can be a very daunting task -- and a very confusing one. With so many fad diets on the market, it's very tempting to go for the quick fix. The truth is, these plans will usually result in temporary weight loss. And when the weight returns -- and it will -- you usually get a few extra pounds to boot. A much smarter choice is to select a healthy weight loss alternative, and there are plenty of them out there to pick from.
The problem with fad diets is they usually involve decreasing your caloric intake too low. You'll be thrilled with the initial results because the pounds will start rolling off and you'll think you're finally on your way. The truth is, your body isn't going to cooperate with you in this effort. What will happen is the body's protection mechanisms will kick in and you'll eventually go into what's called "starvation mode."
Quite simply, when you deprive your body of calories, it goes into starvation mode in order to protect you from yourself. Your metabolism slows to a halt and your body hangs on to your stored fat, which is counterproductive to what you're trying to accomplish. Then when you do return to even a halfway normal diet, look out! The body is going to hold on to everything it can just in case this happens again. You'll start gaining weight again and probably end up heavier than when you originally started.
And not only will fad dieting not result in permanent weight loss, diets that don't allow certain types of foods or restrict calories to an unhealthy amount will leave you feeling tired and listless and can even be potentially dangerous to your health.
Healthy weight loss isn't a quick fix. Those who are truly successful at shedding the pounds and keeping them off think about losing weight as a permanent lifestyle change. And while this may not sound so appealing, what most people don't realize is that eating healthy doesn't mean you have to deprive yourself of good food. There are so many healthy alternatives to even some of the "naughty" foods that won't pack on the pounds. It's just knowing where to find them or how to cook them. It may surprise you to know that when you're on a healthy weight loss program, you may actually get to eat MORE food than you normally would. You'll be fueling your body, increasing your metabolism, and as a result, the pounds will start to roll off.
Finding the diet program that's right for you isn't always easy. Sometimes it takes trying more than one program before you find that perfect fit. But be assured that choosing a healthy weight loss program versus one of the fad diets will always give better results. Find a plan that suits you, and then add even a moderate exercise program to the scenario. You'll be shocked by what you can accomplish.
